Between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of World War I Lake Michigan was home to over sixty vessels that were used to carry Christmas trees to Chicago & Milwaukee.
The Ships
The Sailors
The men who sailed the  Christmas tree ships were often immigrants who took tremendous risks to establish their families in their new country.
One town in Wisconsin stands out as the birthplace for this maritime Christmas tradition.  Today the town is called Algoma, but in the 1800's it was called Ahnapee (Ann-a-PEE).
